Why these rules exist
DOYO is a place to go do things and show what you did. Badges, stories, groups, and comments only work when people can post honestly without being harassed, and when nobody has to brace for what the next post might contain.
These guidelines apply everywhere in DOYO: badge names and artwork, stories and photos, comments, group names and descriptions, profile details, messages, and anything else you can put in front of another person. They apply the same way whether your account is public or private.
Everything you share on DOYO must follow these guidelines, regardless of where or how it is shared.
What we expect
- Post your own experiences, and be honest about what you did.
- Keep it something a general audience can see. DOYO is intended for users ages 13 and up.
- Disagree without attacking the person.
- Respect people who do not want to interact with you. Do not attempt to circumvent a block.
- Report content that breaks these rules instead of reposting it.
Content that is not allowed
The categories below are removed whenever we find them, whether they were reported or not.
Sexual and explicit content
No pornography, sexually explicit imagery or text, sexual solicitation, or content whose purpose is sexual gratification. This includes badge artwork, story photos, comments, usernames, and group names.
Nudity
No nudity or sexualized depictions of the body, including partial nudity framed sexually. Non-sexual contexts such as classical art, medical imagery, or breastfeeding are allowed, but the burden is on the post to be clearly non-sexual.
Graphic violence and gore
No graphic injury, mutilation, dead bodies, animal cruelty, or violence posted for shock value. No threats of violence against anyone, and no content that glorifies or promotes a violent act.
Harassment and bullying
No targeting a person with insults, slurs, sexual harassment, unwanted sexual attention, threats, or coordinated pile-ons. No posting someone's private information. No creating accounts to evade a block.
Hate speech
No attacking, dehumanizing, or calling for the exclusion of people based on race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, caste, sexual orientation, sex, gender identity, disability, or serious disease. Hate symbols and slurs used to attack, intimidate, or promote hatred are not allowed.
Spam and platform manipulation
No bulk or repetitive posting, engagement farming, fake badges created to inflate a profile, scams, phishing, or links to malware. No selling or transferring accounts.
Impersonation
No pretending to be another person, brand, or organization, and no claiming an achievement or a badge that is not yours. Parody and fan accounts must make that obvious in the name and description.
Self-harm and dangerous activity
No content that encourages suicide, self-harm, or eating disorders, and no challenges or stunts that are likely to seriously injure someone who copies them. Some inherently dangerous activities performed by trained professionals may be permitted under the professional-only tier described below. Content promoting self-harm or reckless activity is prohibited under every tier.
Illegal goods and activity
No sale or promotion of drugs, weapons, stolen goods, counterfeit items, or other illegal transactions.
Child sexual abuse material — zero tolerance
Any sexual content involving a minor, sexualization of a minor, or attempt to solicit, groom, exploit, or arrange sexual contact with a minor is prohibited. When we become aware of this content, we may immediately remove it and suspend or terminate the associated account. Where required by applicable law, we report apparent child sexual exploitation to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) CyberTipline and preserve relevant content and records as required by law.
Do not re-share suspected child sexual abuse material in order to report it. Use DOYO's reporting tools to report the content where it appears. For more information, see our Child Safety Standards.
Dangerous and professional-only content
Every badge asks a real person to go and do a real thing. Some activities are safe for anyone, some should only be attempted by trained people, and some are not safe to attempt at all. When publishing a badge, the creator chooses between two safety classifications: Anyone can try this or Only trained professionals should try this. Reckless content cannot be published under either classification.
Anyone can try this
The ordinary case. There is a reasonably safe way to attempt the badge without specialized training, licensing, or protective equipment. Most badges belong here.
Only trained professionals should try this
Some activities are genuinely dangerous but can be performed by people with appropriate training or experience—for example, a stunt performer's routine, a qualified diver's descent, or a competition rider's run.
These badges are marked as professional-only throughout DOYO. Before unlocking a professional-only badge, users are shown a warning and required to acknowledge it. DOYO does not encourage users to attempt these activities. Anyone who chooses to participate is responsible for their own safety and the safety of those around them.
We warn. We do not encourage.
Reckless content
Content involving activities that have no reasonably safe way to perform them, including lying on train tracks, hanging from moving vehicles, or entering active rail lines, substations, or other hazardous restricted areas.
This content is not allowed on DOYO under any safety classification. Marking a badge as professional-only does not make otherwise prohibited reckless content acceptable.
What no badge may do
Regardless of its safety classification, a badge may not:
- Encourage self-harm, suicide, or disordered eating.
- Ask anyone to hurt another person or create a situation where someone else is likely to be harmed.
- Put someone in danger without their knowledge or consent.
- Encourage damaging, defacing, or stealing property.
- Describe an activity that has no reasonably safe way to perform it.
If a badge falls into one of these categories, it cannot be published under any safety classification.
What we ask of creators
When publishing a badge, creators must choose its safety classification and confirm that it follows these guidelines. That confirmation is recorded with the creator's account, the applicable guidelines version, and the time it was made.
Intentionally marking a badge as Anyone can try this when it clearly requires professional training or presents significant danger is itself a violation of these guidelines.
If a badge is in the wrong tier
Report it. DOYO provides a reporting reason for badges that appear dangerous without being appropriately classified.
A moderator may reclassify a badge when necessary. The creator's original declaration and subsequent moderation history are retained.
Messages
Direct messages and group messages are private between the people in them. They are not a separate place with separate rules. Everything under Content that is not allowed also applies to messages.
A message can contain text and one attachment. Attachments are references to content already in DOYO, such as a badge, story, group, group invite, or system badge. You cannot upload a photo, video, or file directly into a message. Recipients can only view attached content they already have permission to access.
What is not allowed in a message
- Sexual content, sexual solicitation, or unwanted sexual advances.
- Any sexual content involving a minor, sexualization of a minor, or attempt to solicit, groom, exploit, or arrange sexual contact with a minor.
- Threats, intimidation, sexual harassment, slurs, or repeated unwanted contact.
- Hate speech, as defined above.
- Sharing someone else's private information without their permission.
- Scams, phishing, malware, or bulk or automated messaging.
- Attempting to contact someone who has blocked you by using another account.
- Redistributing content that was removed from DOYO or that you know violates these guidelines.
Being in a group with someone does not give you permission to message them privately or change any of these rules.
Who can message you
You choose who can start a conversation with you under Message privacy in Settings. The options are Everyone, Friends (people you mutually follow), and Nobody.
If you allow message requests, someone who otherwise could not start a conversation with you may send one text-only request without an attachment. You can accept or decline it, and the sender is not notified when you decline.
Once you accept or reply to someone, that conversation remains open even if you later change your message privacy settings. Changing your settings affects who can start new conversations with you.
Users under 18 have additional protections that cannot be disabled. They cannot choose Everyone or receive message requests. An adult who does not mutually follow a user under 18 cannot start a direct conversation with them or send messages into a group conversation that includes them.
Blocking and muting
A blocked account cannot start or continue a direct conversation with you or add you to a group.
If you and someone you have blocked are already in the same group, neither person is automatically removed. You remain in the group but do not see each other's messages.
You can also mute a conversation to stop receiving its notifications without leaving the conversation or notifying the other participants.
Reporting a message
You can report an individual message or a group conversation. Use the report action on the message or in the conversation menu, choose a reason, and provide any information that would help us understand the issue.
When you report a message, we preserve a copy of that message and up to five preceding messages available to you at that time to provide context for the report.
Access to additional conversation content for moderation purposes is limited, time-bound, requires justification, and is logged.
Reported messages create moderation cases. Individual messages reported by multiple people may be temporarily hidden while the report is reviewed. A group conversation is not automatically hidden based only on the number of reports.
Reporting is private. The person you report is never told who reported them.
Messages are not end-to-end encrypted
DOYO messages are not end-to-end encrypted. This means DOYO is technically able to access message content when necessary.
DOYO does not proactively scan or automatically read the content of private messages. We may access message content when reasonably necessary to investigate reports, enforce our policies, protect users, or comply with applicable law.
Where required by applicable law, we report apparent child sexual exploitation to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) CyberTipline and preserve relevant content and records as required by law.
If someone deletes their account
If someone deletes their account, messages they previously sent may remain visible to other participants in the conversation, but they are no longer associated with an active DOYO account.
How to report
Every badge, story, comment, group, profile, message, and group conversation in DOYO has a report action.
- Open the item you want to report.
- Choose Report from its menu.
- Pick the reason that best describes the problem.
- Add any detail that would help a reviewer understand what you are seeing.
- Submit.
Reporting is private. The person you report is never told who reported them.
You can also hide individual content so that you no longer see it, or block an account to prevent direct interaction and limit visibility between you and that account.
What happens after you report
- Every successful report creates or is added to a moderation case associated with the reported content. Multiple reports about the same content are grouped together.
- Some types of content may be temporarily hidden after reports from multiple eligible users. This is a safety measure, not a final moderation decision.
- We review reported content and take action when it violates these guidelines. Reports involving child safety or credible threats are treated as a priority.
- If content is removed, the account that posted it may receive a notification and can view available information about the moderation action in Content Status.
- Depending on the circumstances, action may include removing or restricting access to content and taking additional action when necessary to protect DOYO and its users.
If your content is removed
If content you posted is hidden or removed, you may be able to view the moderation action in Content Status in your app settings. Content Status shows available information about the action, including its reason and current status.
For eligible moderation actions, you can request a review from Content Status. If your appeal is approved, the content is restored and protected from being automatically hidden again based solely on additional reports, unless that protection is later cleared, such as after a material change to the content.
Appeals are reviewed by the DOYO team. You will be notified when a decision is made, and available details about the decision can be viewed in Content Status.
Enforcement
When content violates these guidelines, we may remove or restrict access to the content and notify the account that posted it. Available information about the moderation action may also appear in Content Status.
Depending on the nature of the violation, we may take additional action when appropriate to protect DOYO and its users.
Content involving child sexual abuse or exploitation, credible threats of violence, or other serious safety concerns may be escalated for additional action. Where required by applicable law, we may preserve relevant information and make reports or disclosures to the appropriate authorities.
Attempts to evade moderation or enforcement, including by reposting removed content or using another account, are prohibited.
